Brendan has not been capped for Australia nor Malaysia. Brendan is qualified to play for Australia as he was born and raised at Australia. He is also qualified to play for Malaysia through parentage. But Brendan has yet not decided to play for either Australia or Malaysia. however, in a recent interview Gan revealed that he is interested to play for Malaysia and he would be open to play for Malaysia if the opportunity arises.[11]
On 4 February 2011, Brendan officially declared his interest and desire to play for Malaysia on a recent interview with Astro Awani. The possibility of Gan playing for Malaysia was first mooted in late 2009 when he spoke via telephone to the FourFourTwo (TV series) on Astro SuperSport. Brendan says that he had been watching Malaysia playing at the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup and he was very interested to play with the Malaysian Tigers. The Football Association of Malaysia supported this decision and had allowed Brendan to play for Malaysia. This decision was encourage by Sydney FC and his father, who is a Malaysian Chinese from Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia.[12][13]

According to FIFA, Brendan would have to drop his Australian passport in order to play for Malaysia.[citation needed]
